Kermodepaw paused, looking at the young kit playing dead at his paws. "Heh, very nice." He chuckled , "You're a natural at playing dead." He laughed, standing himself back up and taking a couple pawsteps to hover his head above the kits. "But mind you, It wont be a joke if mau gets his claws on you." He hated to bring it up, but he couldn't stop thinking about the danger the kit was in as long as he was here. "Anyway..." He meowed, pulling away. "Let's call it a day, I'd like to get some hunting in before sunhigh; and you must be starving." He meowed, then winced, wishing he could take back his words. Was the kit even old enough to be eating freshkill? He hadn't even stopped to ask the kits age. He looked over his shoulder, his eyes reflecting guilt for a moment before he blinked the feeling away, waiting for an answer from coalkit...

Coalkit replied with a nervous grin and laugh, rubbing a paw up behind his head. "Well, you said I was dead. I was just listening was all." The tom mewed, in an attempt to be playful. Though, it still felt awkward to try and act that way around the older cat. And he probably hated bringing up Mau more than Kermodepaw did, ears lowering back to his head just at the mention of him. The idea of hunting might've brightened his mood... if he were an apprentice. But he wasn't, and he had hardly the first clue on how to hunt, even if he was starving like the rogue'd said.. which he was. Sure, he was big enough now to eat fresh-kill, but he had to catch it first... "I.. I don't know how to hunt, either." He admitted, actually sounding ashamed that he didn't. He hardly knew anything about how to survive besides what Kermodepaw had taught him. He was pitiful. How could the white cat ever expect him to stand up to Mau if the time came?

Kermodepaw looked over his shoulder at the young kit. "You have much talent..." He praised, leaning down to meet his eyes. "I have no doubt you can do it." He meowed. He was being completely honest; this kit showed an overwhelming amount of promise and skill.. "I'll show you, and if worst comes to worst, I'll catch something for us." He told Coalkit, pulling away again, feeling the wind pick up, tossing his long white fur around. "Like with tracking, We'll start easy. I know an excellent spot in the river where the redfish spawn. There really vibrant and easy to see, and they tend to stick to the shallow water..." He meowed. "Hope you don't mind fish..." He pondered the possibiliy and hoped coalkit wasn't a pick eater...

Coalkit felt his ears grow hot with embarrassment at the praise, ducking his head to avoid the bigger tom's piercing gaze. "I've, uh, never had fish before." His clan hadn't fished, so it wasn't too surprising. It was a rare occurrence for any warrior or apprentice to bring a fish back at home. And the last time that'd happened, he'd still been nursing from his mother, so he couldn't have tried it anyways. "What does it taste like?" He realized that taste was a hard thing to describe, but maybe it could start some kinda conversation? He didn't like the quiet, especially here. When he wasn't doing something, his mind was left to wander, more often than not, back to home. And when he wasn't thinking about that, he was imagining what Mau might do to him if he ever caught him alone.

Kermodepaw chuckled. "So, you've never had it then huh? Well, I'n my own opinion they aren't as good as a mouse or vole; but they fill you up quick." He explained, somewhat satisfied to have his mind of training. " Once you get around the fins, the meat's just fine, depending on it's size , some of them can be really tender." Talking about food was beginning to make his mouth water and he flicked his tail for Coalkit to follow wile he started off back in the direction of the river. "If we're lucky the water won't be to cold either..." He meowed, looking up at the sun that had nearly reached its peak in the sky...

Coalkit nodded, hurrying to catch up with the other's longer legs. "Won't it be getting colder now that leaf-fall's here though?" The kit asked, even though he already knew the answer. He didn't exactly fancy taking a dip in cold water, or, any water for that matter. Getting his paws wet wasn't too bad, but he wasn't about to jump in and drown! He wondered how different fish were from land-prey. He'd seen them before, but never felt or tasted one, or even smelled one. The water did good at hiding whatever scent they might have. "You don't think we'll run into Mau there, do you?"

Kermodepaw considered for a moment before shrugged. "Oh.. honestly don''t know. What he does with his time isn't really something I think about." He admitted. His eyes wandered down to his paws as he though about it for a moment. It was probably better he didn't know what Mau was up to when he wasn't around. "Let's put it aside for now." He suggested. "If he's there we can worry about it then." He meowed in an attempt to give the kit some amount of comfort. It was then that something hit him. What was going to happen to Coalkit? If he was luck enough to survive to a point where he could successfully defend himself and fight of his kidnappers, would he return home to his clan? He doesn't know the way home... his thoughts countered. But if Coalkit was going to stay, Kermodepaw would have to teach him more then just how to defend himself. Him and Mau were killers, and there was no running from that. Would he one day have to teach Coalkit to kill? And if he didn't? Kermodepaw lifted his eyes from the ground, all the anticipation and calm he might have had a moment ago had been wiped out by an indescribable guilt, and he wished he ad never taken Coalkit from his clan...

"Kermodepaw?" Coalkit hesitantly prodded the tom, who seemed to be lost in thought. What was he thinking about, the kit wondered. What they'd do if Mau was there? He had to wonder himself if the white cat still planned to protect him if it came to that. He imagined how this rogue was acting was similar to how a mentor would be with their apprentice, but, did Kermodepaw really have any affection for him like a mentor would, or was it all just an act? How could he know he wasn't faking, pretending to gain his trust? If that was the case, then he supposed he should be glad for it. Better to have him pretend and be nice, then not, and be cruel like Mau, even if it meant nothing in the end. "Are you alright?" He continued anyways, despite his doubts on the other''s intentions with him. If he was right, he couldn't very well let Kermodepaw know he thought he was pretending, or he might stop. And then he'd have two Mau's to deal with.

Kermodepaw exhaled deeply, looking at Coalkit, narrowing his eyes, not saying anything for a couple heartbeats. "Coalkit..." He meowed. He wasn't sure about what he was doing. "When you're old enough to get by on your own..." He started slowly. "Will you look for home?" He figured the obvious answer was yes. There was no reason he could think of why Coalkit would want to stay. He had family and a loving clan to go back to one day; compared to what? A couple rogues that he couldn't trust? That might turn on him at any moment? He couldn't help but think about when he had left his own clan, only newly apprentice. He had given thought to going back but... he had never mustered up the courage to return; or the power to keep his urges in check. But that was different. Being kidnapped was nothing like choosing to leave a place. "I mean..." Kermodepaw suddenly felt like a mousebrain, averting his eyes and pulling away, taking a few pawsteps off to sit himself, wrapping his fluffy white tail around his paws...

Coalkit was surprised by the question, that much was clear on his face. He wouldn't think he'd even need to ask, the answer seemed all to obvious. He wanted to go home. The problem was, he didn't have the first clue how to get back, and he doubted either of the two toms would be willing to show him the way. Not now, at least, when they could shred him for bedding without even trying. He shivered at that particular thought, hastily pushing it away. "You mean... what?" He asked, instead of answering Kermodepaw's initial question. That had been enough on it's own, but what shocked him more was the rogue's reaction. He looked genuinely upset. Well, either that, or he was a very good actor. But, why would he be acting now? Unless he was purposely trying to depress him. I wish I had some way of knowing. Are you just using me for your enjoyment, or do you actually care? He was tempted to say the words out loud, but he thought it better to hold off on that, for now at least. Maybe he should see what else he had to say first.

Kermodepaw didn't look back at Coalkit. "I mean..." He started. "Well, it's exactly as it sounds." He confirmed. "Will you go home when you get the chance?" He repeated his question, pushing his own problems aside. He didn't need to see the kit to tell that he was surprised; kermodepaw had even surprised himself with his words. Kermodepaw shut his eyes and again got to his paws, turning around to look at the kit. "You know what? forget I asked..." He growled slightly, frustrated with himself, turning back towards the river; the sound of rushing water wasn't to far off and he wanted to get on with something else. "Those fish aren't going to wait for us, move your tail!" He meowed, heading off again...

Coalkit sighed quietly, saying nothing as he fell into step behind the rogue. Of course he'd want to go home the moment he got the chance. They'd kidnapped him for StarClan's sake! Any cat in his right mind would want to go back. But, there was the matter of getting that done. He'd be dead before he even got close, not that he even knew the way there. Though, he was beginning to wonder if Kermodepaw would hurt him or not. Wait, what was he saying, hadn't both the cats attacked him before they took him? He couldn't remember... Maybe it was because he didn't want to, but how could he be sure he'd even remember his family and friends by the time he was capable of making it back to them? Would he still want to go back, to a bunch of cats he couldn't even remember? The young tom shook his head, suddenly tired of arguing with himself on the matter. It was giving him a headache. "What'll we do after we eat?"

"well..." Kermodepaw considered. "There's still plenty of daylight left, I suppose we could train some more..." Kermodepaw suggested, though he wasn't so keen on the idea, he was getting bored of training. "Actually, Mau and I, before... visiting... brambleclan, we had planned to travel down the river to the mountains. There's a place there I think I may be able to reach my ancestors." He admitted to the young kit. "It's important I make this journey; Mau was supposed to come along, but with you here..." He trailed off. He assumed Coalkit would instantly realize the issue and he wouldn't need to further explain the problem. "I wont leave a kit on his own, not ever... but Mau needs to accompany me; I have my reasons for taking him along." He Told the kit as they neared the stream. The water bubbled and thin sheets of ice dotted the edges of the bank; the redfish Kermodepaw had spoken off swam very near the waters edge, darting in and out from under hanging branches. Kermodepaw just stood there watching the prey below the waters surface...

At first, Coalkit tried to imagine what the mountains might be like. He'd never seen them, not really, just knew that they were giant hills off in the distance. Any other time, he might've enjoyed the chance to go see them. He probably wouldn't even have minded it too much if it were just him and Kermodepaw. But with Mau... that thought scared him. Why did they have to take him? He assumed they'd be coming back, so he didn't see what the problem would be with going without him. What reasons could the white tom have for wanting to bring him along? He was tempted to ask, but thought better of it before he opened his mouth. If he wasn't saying so openly, the kit probably wouldn't like the reasons. "We are coming back, right?" He asked, not only to confirm his assumption, but to keep off the subject of Mau. He doubted he could change Kermodepaw's mind, despite the numerous chances that were sure to come up on the way to the mountains of Mau getting him alone, doing StarClan knows what to him.

Kermodepaw nodded. "That's the plan." He meowed, turning his attention to the fish in the water. "I'll explain more to you later, but for now let's get you hunting... let's see..." Kermodepaw let his gaze travel along the edges of the riverbed, finding a large flat stone that reached out a small ways, making for an excellent perch. "Take that spot over there..." He instructed, pointing with his nose. The rock wasn't to far off so he wouldn't have to move for the kit to see him. Wile he waited he flicked the tip of his tail, dabbing the water ever so slightly with the very tip; almost instantly four or five of the bright red fish swam towards him before turning away as he lifted his tail. Kermodepaw let out a soft mrr of satisfaction and looked to Coalkit, waiting for him to take his place by the river...

Coalkit gave a small nod in answer, padding silently to the spot Kermodepaw had indicated. To be honest, he was glad to be coming back after the mountains, even if it wasn't really home. At least it was closer to home, the thought provided a little comfort. Way up in the mountains, would StarClan even see him anymore? The kitten shook his head; he was supposed to be trying to hunt, he could think about these things later. But when he imagined hunting, fish had never even come into the equation, he knew nothing of how to catch one. At least he knew a bit about mice and birds and such, mainly from bugging the apprentices, as well as his mother about it. But fish'd hardly ever crossed his mind back home, what was he supposed to do now? "So how do I catch one?" He asked simply, turning to look at the older cat. He'd obviously know, otherwise he wouldn't have brought him here.

Kermodepaw smiled. "First, try tapping the surface of the water just a little bit with a claw or the tip of your tail..." He demonstrated, again dipping the very tip of his tail just enough to ripple the surface of the water. Another school of fish busily swam up and darted away just as he retracted his tail from the cold water. "It tricks the fish into coming into striking range." He explained. "Also..." He added. "Try not to cast a shadow over the water, that'll scare them off. Kermodepaw watched the fish beneath the surface as he continued to lure them closer with his tail and at the last second... Kermodepaw's Paw whipped out, stabbing into the shallow waves and nearly as fast, it came out with a bright red fish hooked on his claws. Kermodepaw leaped back, flicking the fish into a space behind him where he leaped on it and delivered a killing bite to it's head. "You've gotta be fast about it..." He meowed, turning back around to look at Coalkit. "Otherwise they just flop back into the water. Once their close, try and get in and out of there as quick as possible; pull in toward you, if you try and hook it forward or upward, it's just fly back into the water." He told the young cat. "Give it a try, let's see how you do..."

Coalkit gave a tilt of his head to the white cat, watching with a slight interest as he repeated the action with his tail. Fish must be stupid, he thought, if they walked, er, swam, right into the predator's paws! Not that he had any particular desire to get his paws wet catching them, but, what could he do? He watched as the other caught his own fish, before setting to work on getting his own. He played through the motions Kermodepaw had shown him a few times in his head, then let his tail snake across the rock, leaning back so no shadow would cast across the water, and carefully let his tail-tip touch the liquid surface. The cool water sent a shiver down his spine, but he watched as fish began to crowd around the spot where his tail made ripples in the water. Suppressing a bit of a giggle, the kit drew his tail closer to himself, though still let it touch the water, and watched as the shiny creatures followed it. Focus gone, the little tom whipped his tail away and struck out a paw with a splash. Only too late did he realize he reached too far, as the fish, and the water got closer, and the rock vanished from under his paws. A short, helpless mewl was all he managed to get out before he fell face-first into the river, swallowing a mouthful of water, and bumping his head on the rocky bottom even before the current got a chance to sweep him away, which the fish-filled waters seemed only too glad to do so. Hitting his head dazed him, making his vision through the water all the more blurry, like trying to see silverpelt through a cloud-filled sky, almost completely blacked out. When his body registered what was going on, obviously before his brain did, he started thrashing about, paws flailing in a futile attempt to get out and onto dry land again

Kermodepaw watched with satisfaction as the young kit at the riverside dabbed his tail in and out of the water, flicking his ears with amusement as Coalkit watched the red fish. He Had so much energy and Kermodepaw admired his spirit, under the kits circumstances Kermodepaw might have... He wasn't sure what he would do in the kits place. As he watched he took some mental notes regarding Coalkit's position and stance and was about to led a tip when Coalkit suddenly Lashed out with a paw and fell into the water. Kermodepaw leaped to his paws, his eyes searching the waves as he leaped closer to the rivers edge, Looking for where the small kit had fallen. "Coalkit!" He called. His ears were pricked and his tail stood out straight behind him, lashing side to side. Worry glinted in his wide red eyes. He waited a few moments before he caught a glimpse of the small cat resurfacing, just a wisp of dark fur on the waters surface. Kermodepaw didn't hesitate, dashing along the rivers edge to catch up with Coalkit he meowed, "Hold on!" Luckily for him Coalkit hadn't been pulled to far out, but his heart sank as he saw what was ahead. A tiny ripple that slanted out into the middle of the river indicated a current that pulled into the deep waters; the undertows were strong and if Coalkit got sucked out there.. .Kermodepaw wasn't entirely confidant he could save him. "Kermodepaw!" Kermodepaw heard a roar sound behind him and a swift streak of silver rammed him in his side, throwing the white tom off his paws and into the shallow ends of the river. The water tugged at his paws and he had to scramble to re-gain his footing in the moving water. He snarled, his red eyes flashing up to see Mau stalking along the waters edge. When did he get there? He hadn't scented him... "Mau! What do you think you're doing!?" He roared, his eyes flicked form the silver tom to Coalkit who was floating farther away with every second. "I wont Loose to you Kermodepaw!" Mau screeched, his own eyes blazing with triumph. Kermodepaw spat at Mau in response, reluctantly turning away and motoring his large paws in the direction he had seen Coalkit last. "The kit's mine!" Mau bolted down the river, being out of the water he was much faster than Kermodepaw, taking himself a distance down stream where he plunged into the water after the kit...

When his head broke the surface, Coalkit instinctively tried to suck in air, even if half of that turned out to be only more water. But not a moment after he'd drawn in that breath, the current yanked him under again. He flailed and thrashed, but to no avail, his fighting limbs serving only to stir up the water around him, his claws pulled painfully on the rocky earth below whenever he'd try to get a grip on it. I'm gonna die. I'm gonna drown. Seemed the only clear words in his head for what felt like forever. His senses had all but left him. His vision was all blurry when beneath the water, and his hearing was dulled by the water that filled his ears. Water went down through his nose and mouth whenever he tried to breathe, which he was desperately needing about now. His young lungs felt like there were a cat's claws tearing through them both, masked only by the feeling of the water he knew would be filling them with every swallow of water and air. This was all, apparently, the least of his problems. Reaching just a brief spot, where it was shallow enough for the ground beneath the waves to slow him down, his head broke the surface of the water once more. And the first thing he spotted was the two cats coming after him, a fresh wave of fear washing over his body. Oh, why couldn't he have drowned already? It'd be better than anything Mau might do to him! It was just about then that he started really fearing for his life, just as the current swept him back into deeper waters again, and the tom only managed a terrified wail before his head plunged back under. "Kermodep--" Cut short, more river-water found it's way into the kit's open maw, leaving him coughing and spluttering, holding back the urge to claw at his throbbing chest as the river kept up it's pull on him. Though, at least for now his head remained above the water level, which he might've wondered, if he were thinking straight, were just so he could watch Mau kill him.
